You are a God send. This is amazing. Thank you so much.

Sorry about that. Various posts on the web confirm that the device reads bluray.
After trying unsuccessfully to play commercial DVDs in vlc it occurred to me that the HitachiLG DT-ST CA30N might be limited to burning bluray disks rather than reading them. Had never thought about bluray before, have no bluray media to test writing and cannot remember the specification for the device. Sounds dumb I know but old men forget. Have not been able to get onto the Dell community forum because of the complicated login process and forgotten password.
Interesting stuff here, i've been trying to get a dual boot going on an x51 with no success, ill try these and see what happens.
No problem Ian, we are here to help you.
I believe creating a .wikidot account enables automatic emailing options. If that is not the case, I would recommend checking regularly (once every 2-3 days) for updates.
Thanks ArturoDeza,
Sorry for not responding earlier.
Thanks for putting my mind at rest.
When the machine arrives I will follow those steps to install Linux and the driver- I am considering dual booting incase I need Windows to update the bios in the future.
Is there a way to get emails when a post is replied to?
Cheers
Ian
This problem is strange. Have you updated the BIOS? can you take a picture of it with your smartphone and post it online?
Hello. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my x51 with no trouble. However, once logging in, I have an issue where Ubuntu cannot 'grab mouse' whenever I have a program/windows open. I am unable to move the windows around, or click anything other than the super menu to shutdown. Has anyone had a similar issue? And if so, How could I fix it?
Hello Ian,
I have ran my X51 with two monitors without any problems on Ubuntu 12.04. You should read the guide that we have posted on installing the nvidia drivers though. Without these installed, I doubt you will get good performance or the dual monitor feature you want.
Hi all,
I ordered an X51 yesterday from the outlet site as it was seemed very powerful, small, quiet and good value for money – it of course hasn't arrived yet.
I naively assumed installing Linux, (kubuntu 12.04) would be easy. Now reading on this and other forums it seems it is a little troublesome but possible to install Linux.
I am wondering if I will be able to do dual head with this card. It seems to have two dvi and an hdmi port so I expect it should. I have a much cheaper and older nvidia card which does dual head.
Please can someone put my mind at rest that this new machine will work as I want, I.e work with two monitors. I doubt I will use the machine for gaming, I just want a powerful machine for java and scala development.
Thanks in advance,
Ian
Here is the guide Dave a.k.a. user RustyLambda made for a Dual-boot OS on the Alienware X51

Hello Dave, I just checked out my install, it's on UEFI mode. I'm not sure about Legacy, I'm not sure which one had some compatilbity issues with both Windows and Linux being dual boot.
Any how apparently Alienware has released an A06 BIOS, you should check it out:

Here's some more debate on the install process, someone apparently got a dual boot with ubuntu 12.04 and 10.04 , i don't know if that still counts as dual though.

Please post any progress / stumps while you install. We'd appreciate it!
Does the system have to be set to Legacy Boot or are you able to install Ubuntu via UEFI mode?
Also, is it possible to set up dual boot on this machine, with Win7 and Ubuntu?
Hi Nitro,
Yeah I'm pretty sure it'll be ok. Right now installation is compatible with my A02 BIOS, maybe the A06 already has the fix. We''re here to help in QuantumBeach so post any troubles that come up during your install and read our installation guide here: http://quantumbeach.wikidot.com/forum/t-452990/installing-linux-12-04b
We also have a Nvidia video card install guide: http://quantumbeach.wikidot.com/forum/t-453106/gtx-555
Good morning ArturoDeza,
There is two new bios updates to X51 namely A03 and latest A06, can I use the latter in order to install Ubuntu Precise in my equipment?
X51| i7-3770 | 8GB DDR3 @1600MHz | NV-GTX555 | 1TB HD
HDMI sound output is working as well. Just make sure to set it in the Sound Settings.
Good job Rex!, your workaround works perfectly with my X-51 as well.
Don't forget to restart your computer later guys!
My new glxgears now is running at 15 000 FPS
I got my Alienware X51 on Ubuntu 12.04 to install generic Nvidia drivers by these commands:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
I was able to get HD resolution instead of the maximum 1024 x 768 without this installed. Don't know if it will work for everybody.
